The three figures in overalls have ripped out the tree by its roots; around the roots, we see several anemones, one of which lies trampled at their feet. The anemone represents sacred blood that was shed, in this case, the blood of the tree; the symbolism is also often Christian in nature or can be found in Greek mythology. The three figures carry the tree like a coffin, which takes up the entire image and mimics the format of the canvas. They carry it out of the wild nature, embodied by the weeds in the lower left corner of the image, into civilization on the right side. Civilization is represented by a few houses, a village church, and utility poles. Due to the coffin-like shape of the tree and the telephone poles, which resemble crosses and in whose direction the tree is being carried, one could also speculate that this represents a burial. At the same time, an organism has infiltrated, of which the three figures are unaware, but which, through its eye contact, reveals its intrigue to the viewer. Like the mushrooms that are its hands, the organism represents an unstoppable outgrowth that is being carried into civilization with its unbeknownst nature. The tree may have been uprooted, but through the organism it becomes apparent that something living on is being dragged into human society. It remains unclear when this scene takes place. While it could be around early industrialization, it may as well be very recent in a rural region or anytime in between.
