Katie Kaur
Katie Kaur is a half-Indian British artist, currently based in London. Kaur is drawn to the sensation of being underwater - a liminal space where light murmurs overhead and time slows into liquid silence. Seeking to offer an entranceway into what it feels like to be human in today’s world, Kaur explores intangible, cognitive, and emotional sensations through painting. Using a reductive palette and layering the canvas with diluted washes of pigment, translucent layers are gradually built to enhance the sensation of time passing by. Kaur depicts spectacle universes, seeking a visual language that bridges the material and sensorial, the ephemeral and the physical. The viscosity of water becomes a metaphor for the overwhelming noise of pre-constructed societal narratives.
Fascinated with existential questions of what it means to be alive, Kaur wants to understand what it means to be underwater - still and submerged, yet grasping to stay afloat.
